Curious, I tapped on the bright yellow icon, and couldn\u2019t help but giggle when I read the last line of the group\u2019s pinned message:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hungry already? DABAO me please!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is DABAO?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>DABAO is a peer-to-peer food delivery application that has emerged as part of the plethora of delivery services available. It was co-founded by final-year NUS undergraduates Jax Liu and Zac Chan, as well as recent NUS graduate Tham Xiang Sheng, earlier this year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21613\" style=\"width: 685px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21613\" class=\"wp-image-21613 \" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/photo_2018-12-27_00-34-24.v1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"675\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: NUS DABAO Group<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unlike regular food delivery applications, however, it directly connects hungry individuals (the \u201cDabaoees\u201d) with the delivery people (the \u201cDabaoers\u201d). This means that it eliminates the need for services like Foodpanda and Grabfood, which act as the middleman between food vendors and customers like yourself, as well as a minimum order\u2014the two main things that push up the total cost of ordering food on a lazy Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, DABAO currently offers the cheapest food delivery service in Singapore, with delivery charges as low as 50 cents per order!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Motivations Behind DABAO<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As Zac and Xiang Sheng note, the main motivation behind these astoundingly low prices is the optimization of needs. Xiang Sheng enjoys sitting down and thinking of ways to \u201coptimize everything. It just so happened that I was thinking about what would happen if this [food delivery service] was done in a certain manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Zac, this was sparked by a sense of guilt at constantly having his friends buy food back for him. \u201cI used to stay in hall, and I always asked people to \u2018dabao\u2019 food for me!\u201d he laughs. \u201cAfter a while, you start feeling a bit bad\u2026 I didn\u2019t mind paying a bit, but you don\u2019t tell your friends that you can pay them a few dollars because that\u2019s awkward!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21616\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21616\" class=\"wp-image-21616 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_4380-min-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">DABAO co-founders Zac (left) and Xiang Sheng (right)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was then that the three of them decided to create what is aptly named DABAO. The application is currently only available within the NUS Kent Ridge campus, though the team has plans to expand into the Central Business District areas.<\/p>\n<p>They aim to find out \u201cwhat works for NUS first\u201d, to clean up and plan properly before launching into the public market, which is in turn \u201cless forgiving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even then, as Xiang Sheng emphasizes, \u201cthese plans are dependent on the upcoming semester. If the application is not ready for the mass market, then we will have to go back to the drawing board.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Some Challenges Faced<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Indeed, this already hints at the array of challenges that the team has faced throughout their DABAO journey. For one, both Zac and Xiang Sheng cite time as a crucial factor in affecting their work. Zac highlights: \u201cWe weren\u2019t fully prepared for the first initial run. We each had our own commitments, so it was a bit hard, especially when the plans we had did not tally with the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For instance, while they expected a lack of delivery people to be a key issue, the real problem turned out to be stirring up demand for the service in the first place. While Zac and Jax are still full-time students in NUS, Xiang Sheng is running another business altogether. In fact, he runs a swimming company that he is &#8220;fully committed&#8221; to.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the same time, I also want this [DABAO start-up] to work out,\u201d he notes. \u201cSo my main issue now is to learn how to manage two businesses concurrently.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>Tips for Aspiring Entrepreneurs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>It is through this journey that both have learned valuable lessons and skills which have enhanced their productivity as entrepreneurs. Xiang Sheng stresses on time management as being the most important. &#8220;There must be a routine\u2026 My day is broken down into hourly time slots. It is much more productive than always thinking about \u2018What do I do now?\u2019 and not knowing what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he notes that \u201cyou cannot really do business [successfully] if you don\u2019t self-educate. Whatever you learn in school doesn\u2019t always apply in real life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the same vein, Zac\u2019s biggest takeaway is the importance of adaptability: \u201cThe thing about working in a start-up is that plans always change. Whatever you do, you need to be adaptable\u2026 It is a fast-moving market.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21620\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21620\" class=\"wp-image-21620 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_4375-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The faces behind DABAO<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is against this backdrop that the two young entrepreneurs emphasize the need to have a fiery passion when it comes to starting a business. In fact, they discourage individuals from entrepreneurship if one&#8217;s decision is based on financial gain.<\/p>\n<p>Xiang Sheng stresses that \u201cIf your decision is backed by money, it will get very tiring&#8221;; and Zac agrees, stating that business is \u201cfraught with problems, so you <em>need<\/em> the passion to continue, or you will just give up halfway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even then, Xiang Sheng acknowledges that creating a start-up might not be for everyone, &#8220;And it\u2019s okay if it is not for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if you are a student,\u201d Zac quips, \u201cjust go and give it a shot.
