{"id":21597,"date":"2019-01-15T10:12:50","date_gmt":"2019-01-15T02:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/?p=21597"},"modified":"2019-01-15T10:12:50","modified_gmt":"2019-01-15T02:12:50","slug":"m1-singapore-fringe-festival-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/m1-singapore-fringe-festival-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Things You Can&#8217;t Miss At The M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2019: Still Waters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are not sure about what shows to watch at the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival this year, we&#8217;re here to help!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back from 16 to 27th January 2019,\u00a0its second instalment of themes inspired by iconic Singaporean artists and their signature works\u00a0<\/span>will be curated around the theme Still Waters, taken from the title of a seminal work by groundbreaking Australia-based Singaporean artist Suzann Victor.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Still Waters<\/em> was first presented within a drain at the Singapore Art Museum as a site-responsive performance in 1997. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The museum had been retrofitted with a glass wall around the building to control its internal climate and in doing so a liminal space was created between the wall and the external elements. Glass d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ams were installed for the performance that reversed the original purpose of the drain and filling the performance space with water. The water representing the unwanted that was meant to be concealed.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21804\" style=\"width: 681px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21804\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21804\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"671\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/13.jpg 671w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/13-480x715.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 671px, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of the artist<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Still Waters was performed during the de facto ban on Performance Art in Singapore from 1994 to 2004 and was one of the first few Performance Art works that tackled the issues surrounding the ban on funding for the art form.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 years on, Still Waters still evokes questions and tensions that remain about the politics of art, the body and public space in Singapore, estrangement and reconciliation, and the \u201cremaking of histories\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>In responding to Still Waters, various artists in the Fringe line-up offered works which seek to reclaim alternative or suppressed histories and memories \u2014personal, cultural and political.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The festival will be presenting 13 events, by artists and groups from Singapore and around the world, responding to the theme of Still Waters.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some stellar works to catch at the festival:<\/p>\n<h2><b>A Fortunate Man\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_21806\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21806\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21806\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/01-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/01-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/01-1-980x589.jpg 980w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/01-1-480x288.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: Julian Hughes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 years ago, the visionary writer John Berger and photographer Jean Mohr published A Fortunate Man, which followed the daily life of English country general practitioner John Sassall, witnessing his compassion, and meditating on the role of a doctor.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 years after the book\u2019s publication, Sassall took his own life. He was found wandering the streets of Nuremberg, Germany one day in 1828 with nothing more than the slightly unkempt clothes and shoes on his back and a cryptic letter in his hand.
