One wouldn\u2019t have guessed that she has epilepsy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How It All Began<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI first had epilepsy when I was taking an end-of-year exam in Yishun Junior College. I thought it was just an ordinary headache when BAM! I blacked out. Upon regaining consciousness, I realized that I was laying in the school\u2019s infirmary and was informed that I just had a seizure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never had seizures before so having one was news to me. Just like Hidayah, she didn\u2019t know what to do but quickly learned from the teachers.\u201cThey told me to help turn her to her side and put something in between her teeth to prevent her from biting her own tongue,\u201d Rafidah commented.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of hours later, Hidayah receives confirmation regarding her epilepsy at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>An Epileptics Journey<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since she didn\u2019t know what would trigger an episode nor did she know how to control it, Hidayah&#8217;s epileptic episodes became much more frequent after the first.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, she managed to complete her A Levels, followed by an Honors Degree in Bachelors of Sociology from Nanyang Technological University.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, upon graduating, Hidayah found herself stuck in a rut.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20834 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/alone-black-and-white-cool-wallpaper-764880.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/alone-black-and-white-cool-wallpaper-764880.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/alone-black-and-white-cool-wallpaper-764880-980x654.jpg 980w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/alone-black-and-white-cool-wallpaper-764880-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She had grown comfortable with the simple home, school, and back home routine. This enabled her to understand how to control her epileptic episodes better.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, not having to attend classes enabled her to quench her wanderlust. She was able to head to countries like Japan and Korea whenever her entire family was on a break.<\/p>\n<p>However, travels aside, she realized that she had nothing else to do but idle her time away with the company of her three cats.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20574 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Unknown.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Unknown.jpeg 638w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Unknown-480x313.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 638px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Hidayah&#8217;s three cats\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Time spent doing nothing was akin to torture for it made her feel aimless. It even aggravated her health, so much so that she had lost control over her epileptic condition in public \u2013 something that has never occurred to her before, excluding the first episode.<\/p>\n<p>She was on the bus heading home after a day out with her peers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like my first episode, I was having a headache. Based on my history of epilepsy, I knew that this headache would eventually trigger an episode so I excused myself early from my friends to head back home before anything got awry.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI felt myself losing control. I wasn\u2019t able to control it. I could feel myself rapidly blacking out.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Passengers were taken aback when Hidayah landed with a loud thud on the floor. She was having a seizure whilst being unconscious. She didn\u2019t want to go anywhere alone or be surrounded by strangers. Having an episode alone which will make her vulnerable to strangers became her biggest fear.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, she knew that she had to occupy her time better in order to gain better control of her wellbeing.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>She enrolled herself in multiple workshops such as clay jewelry making and Adobe Dreamweaver together with a friend. Luckily,\u00a0she was able to prevent herself from having another public episode through this.<\/p>\n<p>However, attending these workshops meant that she was running dry financially.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter mulling over it for several days, I decided to put two and two together to form something that I thought would be lucrative. Equipped with knowledge garnered from the workshops, I began to make lots of clay jewelry and sold them on a site that I had personalised via Adobe Dreamweaver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20836 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cups-earphone-flatlay-860009-e1541574899843.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cups-earphone-flatlay-860009-e1541574899843.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cups-earphone-flatlay-860009-e1541574899843-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cups-earphone-flatlay-860009-e1541574899843-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, this time-consuming project of hers wasn\u2019t as lucrative as she thought. In fact, she only managed to sell one item.<\/p>\n<p>While clearing her table, she chanced upon job advertisements. Although she still found the idea of being alone with strangers daunting, her immediate concern was about being in debt.<\/p>\n<p>After three months of job searching, she landed a role in a voluntary welfare organization doing administrative work. The job\u00a0required her to work over the weekends at times, which may not appeal to many. Yet, Hidayah&#8217;s an exception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say I am a workaholic but I do realize that having nothing to do but idle around &#8211; coupled with my harrowing public episode &#8211; had molded me into a woman who appreciates doing anything but nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, I do find myself being able to control my wellbeing better whenever I\u2019m preoccupied.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Going Uphill<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20837 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/alone-dawn-daylight-325520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/alone-dawn-daylight-325520.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/alone-dawn-daylight-325520-980x654.jpg 980w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/alone-dawn-daylight-325520-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upon being employed, Hidayahs health witnessed vast improvements.<\/p>\n<p>What used to be almost a weekly affair for her epileptic episodes dwindled to only once a month. She also\u00a0managed to conquer her fear of being alone with strangers over time.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, just three months ago, she decided to challenge herself even further by applying for a different job.\u00a0 Now, Hidayah&#8217;s an Early Learning Executive for a non-profit organization here.<\/p>\n<p>In closing, she shares: \u201cFor me, I learned that having epilepsy isn\u2019t a \u2018The End\u2019 but a \u2018to be continued\u2019, only with more ups and downs than what one would usually have.
