“Luckily you are wearing this dress because the weather is so hot\u2026 But if I were your mother, I\u2019d tell you to put on a jacket\u201d. An auntie I had only met twice in my life said this to me last week.<\/p>\n

I immediately put on my jacket to avoid awkwardness. And in retrospect, I shouldn’t have.<\/p>\n

As females, I\u2019m sure we’ve often heard of such\u00a0remarks.<\/p>\n

So I’ll begin on a sombre note which will hopefully end up being a liberating reflection – you\u2019ll have to be the\u00a0judge of that:<\/p>\n

Women do not support each other, which is why we will never be able to attain true gender equality.<\/p>\n

Women Coming Out On Sexual Harassment<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Women have been coming forward on social media about their\u00a0sexual harassment encounters\u00a0– being touched on \u00a0public transportation, having their upskirt photos taken, having to endure lewd remarks and being ogled by men.<\/p>\n

Personally, I cannot emphasize enough about\u00a0how much or\u00a0how often I can\u00a0relate to this.<\/p>\n

As a\u00a0woman I find myself being the object of male gaze every single day – cars slow down and honk at me when I\u2019m alone at the bus stop, men leer at me on trains, as though\u00a0mentally undressing me.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Which is why I have nothing but admiration and support for those who have come forward to\u00a0address what we all see as an uncomfortable issue. Which is why\u00a0I was also surprised that\u00a0a significant proportion of the inevitable backlash actually had come\u00a0from my own gender.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, you are not that pretty. Stop being so dramatic and full of yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo scared people look at you, stay at home forever lah!\u201d<\/p>\n

These are actual, victim-shaming comments made by females on sexual harassment posts. See below.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Male gaze aside, it\u2019s time we talk about the women.<\/p>\n

Actual, Empirical Evidence<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In a\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0conducted by social intelligence company Brandwatch, millions of tweets around the world were analysed. Results showed that 52% of misogynistic hate tweets came from women. Demos also conducted a study,<\/a> with similar results showing how half of misogynistic tweets (containing the terms \u201cslut\u201d or \u201cwhore\u201d) came from women.<\/p>\n

Are we actually more misogynistic than men- at least on social media?<\/p>\n

The Sisterhood, Misogyny And Slut-Shaming<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There is just something dysfunctional in the way the sisterhood works – we are put through this parallel struggle of first, pushing to be on a leveled-playing field with men and second, also having to fight equally, if not doubly hard, to gain the respect of other women.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This is heart-breaking at best- we have so much to catch up\u00a0on even without\u00a0fighting amongst ourselves. And at worst\u2026 where is this \u2018sisterhood\u2019 solidarity\u00a0we so triumphantly proclaim?<\/p>\n

Women (and men), if you truly believe that you should just wear more clothes or stay home if you don\u2019t want to fall victim to sexual harassment, then you have what is defined to be internalised misogyny<\/a>. Your mindset stems from years of observing societal practices demean women to the point where you eventually and subconsciously internalise those misogynistic beliefs.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When you begin applying that mindset by validating sexual harassment through conforming to those beliefs, you start thinking that the fault lies\u00a0with\u00a0the victim.<\/p>\n

Women (and men), when you point fingers at another female and make a passing comment about how her shorts are \u201ctoo short\u201d, or that her dress is \u201ctoo revealing\u201d, or that her top is \u201ctoo low cut\u201d, you are slut shaming<\/a> her.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t matter whether you commented out of genuine concern for her safety, or whether you were just being bitchy- as long as you criticize her attire, you are slut shaming her.<\/p>\n

Generational Problem? We Are Catching On As Well<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Granted, this might be a generational issue.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Our mothers and grandmothers and aunts may be the ones nagging at us and telling us to cover up our bodies. They may be the ones telling us that \u201call men are monsters, so dress decently if you don\u2019t want to get into trouble\u201d.<\/p>\n

I concur. But it really is up to us to make a change and stop carrying this mindset forward.<\/p>\n

And it definitely isn\u2019t easy to stop these thoughts – misogyny is so prevalent today, it is the new normal.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Many of us girls have even caught on, objectifying ourselves to get what we want- how easy and common is it to tell your girlfriends to \u201cwork your [their] charm on the waiter and maybe he\u2019ll get us a table without having to queue\u201d?<\/p>\n

Personally, I know it\u2019s pretty darn easy, because I\u2019ve done it before.<\/p>\n

Should We Only Blame Men For Gender Inequality?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So what I’m saying is that it isn\u2019t fair to push all\u00a0the\u00a0blame solely to the men\u00a0and demand change wholly from men when we ourselves are incapable, or even unwilling, to get our\u00a0act\u00a0together.<\/p>\n

I am inclined to believe that there is a little misogyny internalised in everyone – even us women. With just so much comparison, jealousy and contempt amongst ourselves, are we truly supporting each other in this movement for gender equality? How can we expect men to respect us if we don\u2019t even seem to respect each other?<\/p>\n

Let this serve as a reminder the next time a misogynistic, slut-shaming comment hangs precariously at the tip of your tongue.<\/p>\n
