Sounds easy?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you&#8217;re forgetting that apart from a lack of glazed donuts, it also involves many of what\u2019s deemed healthy or sugarless &#8211; fruit juices and sambal alike.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) says a bowl of Mee Siam contains 10 teaspoons of sugar, twice as much as a bowl of Mango Sago dessert does.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.healthhub.sg\/sites\/assets\/Assets\/Programs\/Sweet-talk\/4_spottingsugars_lunchmeesiam.png\" width=\"720\" height=\"696\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthhub.sg\/programmes\/77\/sweet--sugars-and-sweeteners\">Source.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>An increasingly health conscious world has led to sugar receiving the bashing instead of fat -primarily because of how it\u2019s peskily addictive and flavour-potential.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017 National Day Rally, Lee Hsien Loong called for nationwide efforts to reduce the number of diabetics in Singapore &#8211; a stumping one in every nine people, compared to a global average of two in every 25 people.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as surprise, given that rice is Singapore\u2019s staple as much as it is Asia\u2019s. Arguably, Singapore derives less of a reliance on bread and noodles than its neighbours do, but we&#8217;ll save that for another time.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/www8.fairprice.com.sg\/fpol\/media\/images\/product\/L\/11520036_L1.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairprice.com.sg\/en\/fairprice\/asian-drinks\/marigold-chrysanthemum-tea-less-sweet-6s-x-250ml\">Source.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Do we really deserve to have our favourite drinks with circles of doom (the big red ones that read: \u201cLess Sweet\u201d) stamped on them?<\/p>\n<p>To find the answer, we take a shot at tracking Singaporeans\u2019 consumption of sugar.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions of our experiment imbibes the lifestyle of the average working adult in Singapore, who find most of their daily meals at hawker centres, because \u2018basic\u2019 is more comforting, and also because one meal of \u2018organic\u2019 could hurt a man\u2019s wallet so bad &#8211; he might as well never have learnt how to fish.<\/p>\n<h2>Our Sweet, Possibly Sugar-Coated Conditions<\/h2>\n<p>The subject for this experiment, 30-year-old Ryan, was chosen based on the consumption habits of Singaporeans who work desk jobs, the people who take the largest brunt from their diets.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s a writer, who spends his time-pressed weekends cooking and playing Dungeons and Dragons with his friends. He lives a relatively sedentary lifestyle and is a stellar example of the short-term, day-to-day impact that sugar can have on your body without external influences.<\/p>\n<p>A firm advocate of life\u2019s simplest pleasures, Ryan engages in weight-training for strength and personal protection, but don\u2019t bother with cardiovascular exercises.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sin6-2.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t1.0-9\/1459266_10204150639238263_2355234880285396446_n.jpg?_nc_eui2=v1%3AAeGR-A3MTdyVVonzsIT2Pb--weKg6EOxUzFGE8h5C4p3VnNPYsozyiHQDELUh0rEoiFSnqmp2G7wv7Jaw_OgOHA1kOwgxHvvvcamuzsqHUBvRg&amp;oh=053455fc5358a46a7f6f75f78374bf36&amp;oe=5B01E264\" width=\"768\" height=\"528\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ryan, representative of the average Singaporean for this experiment.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To execute our little study, I keep in close contact with Ryan, tracking his every chew and swallow for a full week &#8211; a week that he says is somewhat not \u201chappening\u201d and therefore the best representative of an uneventful, non-feastful week.<\/p>\n<p>I make sure that he drinks the recommended amount of water required for his weight so that our results aren\u2019t slowed by delays in metabolism.<\/p>\n<p>I also take observations on how Ryan feels after meals, allowing for the drawing of comparisons within the effects of meals with varying amounts of sugar, also explaining the effects that sugar can have on one\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14308 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pexels-photo-236817.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Based on HPB\u2019s calculations for the average human being who consumes 2000 calories, added sugar should not make more than 10% of a diet. This means that everything above the range of 40-55 grams of sugar daily is in excess.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, this isn\u2019t an ideal range.<\/p>\n<p>World Health Organisation suggests that the percentage for ideal bodily functions stands at 5%, at about 25 grams daily. That\u2019s about 6 teaspoons of sugar.<\/p>\n<p>Only added sugars are counted here, so this excludes the increase in blood glucose levels that a starchy meal would give you. All measurements counted are from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myfitnesspal.com\/\">MyFitnessPal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unless otherwise stated, serving sizes refer to one, of the medium that the item is usually served in. For instance, \u201cChicken Rice\u201d refers to one plate of Chicken Rice, and \u201csoda\u201d refers to one cup of soda.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what Ryan ate, over the course of one week.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Monday<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After a relaxing weekend, Ryan scrambles to beat the Monday blues and skips breakfast, the ever-recurring mistake that we all make. He heads to the coffee shop below his workplace for a relaxing lunch.<\/p>\n<p>After work, he fixes himself a quick, therapy meal for dinner.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/_\/media\/2017\/05\/26\/15\/55\/Pohs-Hainanese-chicken-rice.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">There is nothing that Ryan loves quite like Chicken Rice. <a href=\"https:\/\/kitchen.nine.com.au\/2017\/05\/26\/15\/46\/pohs-hainanese-chicken-rice\">Source.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lunch: Hainanese Chicken Rice with hot Milo<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 gram (chilli) + 15 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Break: Hot Kopi<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>15 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dinner: Maggi, Curry with 1.5L 100 Plus<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 grams + 7 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Total added sugar consumed: 41 grams (~8 teaspoons of sugar)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ryan claims to feel fine today, though remarking that he needed the Kopi for a pick-me-up until the end of his workday, after which his energy levels crash.<\/p>\n<p>He says he attributes this to the psychological awareness of the end of \u2018work,\u2019 though it\u2019s possible he\u2019s had a sugar crash. He promises he\u2019ll try to eat breakfast tomorrow.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tuesday<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>But, alas! Ryan misses breakfast today, grumbling about having had to rush to get work done. I\u2019m observing a trend &#8211; Ryan feels especially tired about three hours after lunch, which is also when he feels the need for a snack.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely that the cup of Milo Ryan had led to a surge in dopamine levels, causing his brain to enable his daily refreshment cravings.<\/p>\n<p>For dinner, Ryan has a meal that he deems simple before heading home to hang out with family and going to sleep an hour later. He doesn&#8217;t complain of discomfort or unusual tiredness.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wednesday<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div style=\"width: 557px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thewanderlustkitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/indian-chicken-korma-recipe-600.jpg\" width=\"547\" height=\"547\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chicken Korma, an Indian meat dish made with a nut base. <a href=\"http:\/\/thewanderlustkitchen.com\/indian-chicken-korma\/\">Source.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s definitely not tired of Chicken Rice, but he opts for something else today because his late work day today means he can cook some Biryani!<\/p>\n<p>Lunch: Fish Biryani with Chicken Korma<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 grams + 5 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dinner: Chicken Tikka Wrap with Ribena<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 grams + 10 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Supper: Ayam Tuna (Hot With Mayonnaise) with French Baguette<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4 grams + 0 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Total added sugar consumed: 25 grams = recommended range\u00a0(5 teaspoons of sugar)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a productive day for Ryan, and he\u2019s managed to keep his sugar intake somewhat within a healthy range.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure if it\u2019s the intangible joy that comes with eating Biryani, but the day seems to have been somewhat productive.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Thursday<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div style=\"width: 547px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/globalassets.starbucks.com\/assets\/684b1e46052c408f9644963b581a600e.jpg\" width=\"537\" height=\"537\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A glorious, unhealthy White Mocha Frappucino, offered at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starbucks.com\/menu\/drinks\/frappuccino-blended-beverages\/white-chocolate-mocha-frappuccino-blended-beverage\">Starbucks<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By the grace of an early meeting in town, Ryan has to force himself awake at the \u201cungodly hour of 8am.\u201d Coupled with the unforeseen early ending to his meeting, he finds himself with time to kill and a stomach to fill.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast: Popiah<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>0 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lunch: Wanton Mee with Diluted Rose Syrup<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 gram (chilli) + 33grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Break\/Meeting: Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>53 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dinner: Fish Biryani Chicken Korma<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 grams + 5 grams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Total added sugar consumed: 95 grams (19 teaspoons of sugar)<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His relatively active meeting-filled day keep his meal choices light on the sugar. Unfortunately, a post-office hours meeting relegated to a nearby Starbucks skyrockets his sugar intake with one drink.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re both sickened and stunned by how polarising the Starbucks drink is. Whether it was the coffee or sugar intake that kept him from falling asleep remains unclear, though Ryan admits to having had surges and plummets in his brain\u2019s ability to recollect and think throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely that his reliance on sugar was reignited everytime the sugar in its body extinguished the excessive amounts of productivity or energy that it gave him.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, he admits that sweeter drinks are an active, subconscious choice on days that he feels sluggish. Following his relatively healthy breakfast, and moderate lunch, his meal awareness for dinner plummets and it turns out to be a dose of double trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan feels sluggish throughout the day, peaking in energy levels and then feeling compelled to collapse in the duvets of his hotel room. Upon reaching home, his craving for something homecooked is met with chicken sambal and rice.<\/p>\n<p>However, a little piece of JB rears its head in the form of a piece of Castella Cake Ryan\u2019s brought home from his work retreat.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Average daily added sugar consumed: ~69 grams (~14 teaspoons of sugar)<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ryan, whose diet does not stray far from the average Singaporean\u2019s, consumes about <strong>44 grams more sugar than his body needs<\/strong>; also surpassing his body\u2019s thresholds for excessive consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Over prolonged exposure, this can result in liver damage, weight gain, metabolic dysfunction and diabetes, all of which are renown causes of fatality.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan feels these effects daily, which materialise in the most minute forms; like thirst and sleepy spells, and I\u2019m hell-bent on saying that you do too, if your sugar consumption habits are mindless.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Only the best of us can stave off the sweet, sweet pleasures of sugar.
