According to<a href=\"https:\/\/dollarsandsense.sg\/3-hard-truths-about-poverty-in-singapore\/\"> The Department of Statistics<\/a>, the amount needed for basic living expenses is estimated at $1,250 per month, per household. In 2011, 10 to 12% of households fall under this level.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to try for myself if living on $10.40 a day would be manageable, and decided to limit my expenses for a week.<\/p>\n<p>Before I embarked on this journey, I looked through my camera roll, Instagram feed and monthly reviews from <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/wally-smart-personal-finance\/id610314677?mt=8\">Wally,<\/a> the personal finance app I\u2019ve been using for a reality check of my current expenditure.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13771 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.05.14-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.05.14-PM.png 374w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.05.14-PM-218x300.png 218w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out that in 2017, I had spent a total of $4,125.95, with 54% spent on food and drinks. I wondered if I might end up having to eat the same things everyday, or if I would be a spoilsport while making dinner plans with my friends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s How My Week Went:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Monday<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13774 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2868-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breakfast: Ham &amp; Cheese Bun, $1.30<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I started my week with an individually-wrapped bun, which is super convenient to eat on the go. Alternatively, you can grab a bun from Breadtalk or the small neighbourhood bakeries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since most bakeries drop their prices after 9pm, you might be able to grab 3 pieces of bread for as little as $1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13775 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2588.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3878\" height=\"2983\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lunch: <em>Yong Tau Fu<\/em>, $3.60<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peek into any food court or coffee shop in Singapore, and you\u2019re likely to spot a <em>Yong Tau Fu<\/em> (YTF) stall. For approximately $3.50, you\u2019ll get 5 items, a staple and a bowl of tasty soup made with soybeans and <em>ikan bilis<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s technically possible to have YTF for lunch everyday, since you can switch up the clear soup for <em>laksa<\/em> soup base, or savoury-sweet sauce. In addition to its attractive price, YTF surprises you with more variation than you\u2019d expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13776 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2371.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3606\" height=\"2727\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dinner: Lemon Chicken Rice, $3<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of my usual roasted chicken rice, I opted for chicken cutlet with lemon sauce from the food court. Served with soup, chicken rice can be found almost everywhere, and a plate of this goodness is bound to satisfy your growling stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tuesday<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13777 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2421.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/>Breakfast: Banana, ~40c\/ piece.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an instant energy booster, bananas make the perfect breakfast, especially when you\u2019re in a rush. They\u2019re packed with vitamins and nutrients like calcium, potassium and iron, and contain lots of fibre to keep you feeling full for a long time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since bananas are sold in bunches of around 5 pieces for $1.95, it became my go-to breakfast or snack option for the week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13778 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2604.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lunch: <em>Ramyun,<\/em> $3.50 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hwangskoreanrestaurant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Hwang\u2019s Korean Restaurant)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know, instant noodles aren\u2019t the healthiest option around. But I was craving something Korean and <em>ramyun<\/em> offers just the right amount of spice to fit the bill. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most Korean eateries are pretty expensive, there are some hidden gems around, only if you know <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to look.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13781 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.49.48-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.49.48-PM.png 760w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.49.48-PM-480x319.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 760px, 100vw\" \/>\u00a0Snack: Paddle Pop Ice Cream, $1.20 (Mama shop or Vending Machine)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve already had instant noodles for lunch, so I might as well treat myself to a midday snack. Swap your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gelato (~$4\/ scoop) for humble old-school ice cream flavours like Paddle Pop and Solaro, which are bound to take you straight back to your childhood days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re lucky, you might even spot the well-loved Ice Cream Uncle with his cart containing slabs of Raspberry Ripple and Mint ice cream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13790 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2874-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/>\u00a0Dinner: Economy Rice <em>(Cai Png)<\/em>, $3.20<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When on a budget, we can always turn to <em>Cai Png,<\/em> which is sometimes called <em>Cai Fan<\/em>. Prior to this week, <em>Cai Fan<\/em> was seldom my first option, as it seemed rather unattractive and plain. A closer look (and taste) at <em>Cai Fan<\/em> this week made me rethink all of that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For one, <em>Cai Fan<\/em> stalls offer a myriad of dishes to choose from: meats, vegetables, fish and eggs. Many <em>Cai Fan<\/em> stalls offer similar dishes, so you should be able to find your steamed egg and <em>har jiong gai<\/em> (prawn paste chicken) at almost every coffeeshop or hawker centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wednesday<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13783 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2353.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lunch: Subway sandwich (Meal comes with drink and 1 cookie), $5.90<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still feeling guilty over my food choices of yesterday, I tried to make up for it with a 6-inch Subway sandwich filled with veggies. Adding to the usual lettuce, tomato and cucumber trio, I asked for capcicums, onions and olives, which are apparently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/life-style\/health-fitness\/diet\/7-reasons-you-MUST-eat-olives\/articleshow\/18516484.cms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">super healthy.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With daily special meals at $5.90, a meaty sub topped with a generous serving of vegetables could work for dinner as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13784\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2590.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3202\" height=\"2490\" \/><br \/>\nDinner: <em>Omurice<\/em>, $4.50 ($5.50 for public)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all Japanese cuisine will burn a hole in your wallet. I had lunch at FoodClique, the food court in Utown (NUS), and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and portion of food served. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>omurice<\/em> came with chicken <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">katsu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(cutlet), a perfectly made omelette, brown rice, a small side salad and miso soup with seaweed. Carefully balancing carbs, protein and fat, it\u2019s almost hard to believe the restaurant-standard of this satisfying meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thursday <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13785\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2849-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><br \/>\nBreakfast: Carrot Cake, $4.50 (Shared between 2 people)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most places serve either white or black <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chai tau kuey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (carrot cake), the coffeeshop at Block 446 Ang Mo Kio gives you the best of both worlds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The generous portion was shared between 2 people, cutting my breakfast cost to $2.30. A plate of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cai tau kuey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often priced at $3, and makes a decent breakfast, albeit not the healthiest one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13787\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.52.39-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.52.39-PM.png 625w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-20-at-10.52.39-PM-480x364.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 625px, 100vw\" \/><br \/>\nLunch: Fish burger, McDonalds, $5 (Set meal)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For lunch, I indulged in some fast food: Fillet-o-Fish ($2.50 ala carte), which usually comes with a packet of small fries and a drink. I requested for a cup of corn instead of fries, just so I could feel a little less guilty. Otherwise, this would be perfect for cheat days! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13788\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2365-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><br \/>\nDinner: <em>Cai Fan,<\/em> $3.50<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another day, another C<em>ai Fan.<\/em> I have to say, a scoop of curry really makes all the difference! Don\u2019t forget to ask your friendly <em>Cai Fan<\/em> seller for some curry or gravy the next time you order mixed rice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Friday<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13791\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-19-at-5.37.49-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"656\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-19-at-5.37.49-PM.png 656w, https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-19-at-5.37.49-PM-480x359.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 656px, 100vw\" \/><br \/>\nBreakfast:<em> Laksa<\/em>, $3<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My tolerance for spicy food is pretty low, but for tasty <em>Laksa<\/em> with good broth, I\u2019m willing to take on the challenge. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burpple.com\/lik-ming-toa-payoh-laksa-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luk Ming Toa Payoh Laksa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes the perfect Singaporean breakfast, rivalled only by <em>teng chai chok<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kwgls.wordpress.com\/2015\/10\/23\/iconic-hong-kong-porridgesampan-or-boat-congee-%E9%A6%99%E6%B8%AF%E8%89%87%E4%BB%94%E7%B2%A5%EF%BC%89\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Boat Congee)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <em>you tiao<\/em> (fried dough sticks). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13792\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2899-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3650\" height=\"2663\" \/><br \/>\nLunch: Fish Soup Noodle, $3<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my favourite rainy day foods, fish soup noodles can be found in almost every coffeeshop. Served with velvety white fish or crunchy fried fish (or a mix of both, if you wish), fish soup noodles make a pretty satisfying lunch. Sliced white fish and soup are a pretty healthy option, making it the perfect lunch for those counting the calories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13793\" src=\"https:\/\/server1.webstudio.com.sg\/~staging\/ypsg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/IMG_2391.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><br \/>\nDinner: <em>Bibimbap<\/em>, $5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m back at Hwang\u2019s, the Korean eatery where I had my <em>ramyun.<\/em> This time, I ordered the <em>Bibimbap<\/em>, which comes with a variety of vegetables, eggs, soup and 2 side dishes. This meal offered hints of sweetness and spice, quite accurately encapsulating my experience for the week. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Throughout this experiment, I only took into account the cost of meals, while other living expenses like transport were not included.<\/p>\n<p>With a cap of $10.40 a day, I found myself constantly calculating my expenses and comparing prices.
