As a fashion and beauty writer, I\u2019ve observed and written about a ton of trends that have come and gone.<\/p>\n

But 2017\u2019s \u201ctrends\u201d have been an especially progressive for the international and local beauty scene, reaching admirable milestones in diversity and inclusion.<\/p>\n

Take Fenty Beauty\u2019s 40 shades of foundation or Laniege Singapore\u2019s choice to cast an Indian talent as the female lead in their K-drama- inspired short film for instance.<\/p>\n

This got me wondering, with all the good that\u2019s going around, is there still a discussion to be had about how we <\/i>as \u201cdiverse and cosmopolitan\u201d Singaporeans view beauty? And are we\u2019re as open to embracing diversity as we say we are?<\/p>\n

The best way to understand how Singaporeans view our Asian beauty ideals is, of course, to ask the people themselves.<\/p>\n

Like any self-respecting millennial, I took to social media to ask the masses for their opinions on the matter and before I knew it I was flooded with responses.<\/p>\n

Beauty In the Media<\/b><\/h2>\n

A friend of mine who used to write for female-centric publications, Anne, popped up on my Facebook Message notifications, and I urged her to be candid about her opinions.<\/p>\n

“To be honest, <\/i>I feel like Asian beauty standards are so diluted, it\u2019s almost becoming Westernised. But we still adore the skinny girls and Korean face trends,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to facial features per se, it may be a mixture, but it also depends on what the media puts out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Someone else pops up – an old classmate of mine, Zack, who is no stranger to the media industry (yes, he models) chimes in on the subject. \u201cI think the prevalence of K-Pop and what is advertised in general has introduced a new standard of beauty, predominantly Pan Asian features.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike an Asian with Caucasian features; sharp nose, jawlines, double eyelids, slightly brown eyes,\u201d he describes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt happens on a large scale, and it has come to a point where it affects our livelihood.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Having worked in the modelling industry for a few years, I knew exactly what he meant.<\/p>\n

\u201cImagine trying to get casting jobs,\u201d he laments. \u201cMost jobs are catered to models with Pan Asian features unless you\u2019re working for government-related gigs where \u2018local\u2019 Asian features would be more readily accepted because it\u2019s just more representative.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo from a personal perspective, it feels like we are second-class in any sense of the word. As long as we don\u2019t fit that \u2018mould\u2019.<\/p>\n

I take a moment to browse the Facebook pages of a few popular beauty and fashion brands, just to validate some of the opinions I\u2019d received.<\/p>\n

And though I\u2019d say I\u2019m not surprised, it\u2019s still funny how much we as consumers of media brush over the blatant lack of representation within our own media.<\/p>\n

Beauty In Singaporean Society<\/b><\/h2>\n

The scandal that was Night Owl Cinematic\u2019s (NOC) ignorant and later termed \u201ccasually racist\u201d viral beauty video dropped in April.<\/p>\n

For the Singaporeans who hadn\u2019t seen the hordes of posts on social media, the girls of NOC had challenged each other to put together a Coachella festival look when things took a turn for the worse.<\/p>\n

One girl claimed she looked \u201cIndian\u201d disdainfully while another told her she “looked like shit”.<\/p>\n

To add salt to the wound, the girl said: \u201cShe looked like she\u2019s attending Deepavali!\u201d All of them laugh.<\/p>\n

Though this is technically \u201cold news\u201d I call an old schoolmate, Elizabeth, to get an opinion from someone of said, minority race.<\/p>\n

She laughs when I bring this up, \u201cI\u2019m not angry right now, I wouldn\u2019t really say I was angry then,\u201d she ponders \u201cbut it\u2019s not because it doesn\u2019t bother me, I\u2019m just used to it I guess?\u201d<\/p>\n

She recalls,<\/p>\n

“There are moments where it’s in your face – people tell me I\u2019m not as pretty as my Chinese friends, make fun of the colour of my skin or say that I don’t bathe because I\u2019m Indian. It may have been a childish thing when we were in Primary school, but of course it\u2019s not nice.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I ask her how she feels about people defending their right to \u201cjoke\u201d about these things the way NOC did to which she responded, \u201cit\u2019s stupid.”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s stupid because they think the fact that it\u2019s casual makes it better, when it really just makes it worse because they\u2019re not addressing how they make these other girls feel about themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m old enough now to know that this is how I\u2019m seen, I\u2019m mature enough to not let it make me sad or otherwise, but what about other girls who aren\u2019t mature enough to deal with that yet? Are you just gonna say it\u2019s too bad they think they\u2019re ugly because they\u2019re too sensitive?\u201d<\/p>\n

I think back to conversations with friends who\u2019d say things like: \u201cBut it must be harder for her to find a boyfriend because she\u2019s, y\u2019know <\/i>Indian.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not that they\u2019d meant to insult anyone per se, but that general accuracy of that reflection is in itself, disturbing.<\/p>\n

Beauty Is Just Subjective<\/b><\/h2>\n

Of course, there\u2019s the simple argument that beauty is subjective after all, the saying goes, \u201cBeauty is in the eye of the beholder\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis might sound very textbook and politically correct, but I feel like everyone has their own definition of beauty standards\u201d Anne adds.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo people might say Asians like skinny girls, but a lot of other people like skinny girls too, and skinny is perceived to be beautiful in Western\/European countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSome Asians may also like busty girls right? So as long as you fit that ‘perfect package’ you are 10\/10.\u201d<\/p>\n

While we can\u2019t argue with that sentiment, it\u2019s pretty convenient to ignore that our tastes and preferences are largely influenced by what we are exposed to.<\/p>\n

Beauty Diversity In Singapore<\/b><\/h2>\n

I find that when commenting about things as sensitive and subjective as \u201cbeauty\u201d, often times writers struggle to find a balance when conveying their opinions; you can\u2019t be one-sided, or too neutral.<\/p>\n

To ignore or belittle the developments we\u2019ve made as a society in a local and global context would be too harsh on one hand, but I\u2019d argue that calling our beauty scene \u201cdiverse\u201d would be quite a leap.<\/p>\n

With all that said, having a racially inclusive makeup line isn\u2019t gonna change the world overnight – or over a year.<\/p>\n

\u201cRepresenting different faces is really important\u201d Elizabeth states.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can be hard to feel confident because we\u2019re surrounded by this idea of predominantly Chinese or North-Eastern Asians like Koreans and Japanese girls – and I can\u2019t look like that even if I go for plastic surgery.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While we may support the campaigns that\u2019ll ensure that diversity and inclusion isn\u2019t just another fad that gets lost after 2017, we can’t assume that’s all there is to it.<\/p>\n
